Print-on-Demand Pricing Breakdown
Printify Premium vs Printful Growth: when a print-on-demand subscription pays for itself
Both subscriptions cost $24.99 a month at their best rate and both advertise "up to 33% off" products, but they charge for that discount in opposite directions. Printful Growth is $24.99 a month and becomes free for a year once you cross Printful's $12K yearly sales threshold. Printify Premium is $24.99 a month only if you prepay $299 for the year — pay monthly and it is $39, and it never becomes free. Which one is cheaper depends entirely on your monthly product-cost spend, not on your store's revenue.

If you are still building and not sure the store will work, stay on both free plans. Neither subscription pays for itself below roughly $125 a month in pre-discount product cost, and a store finding its feet rarely spends that. If you are growing and committed, Printful Growth is the better-structured deal — it is the only one of the two that stops charging you as you scale, and its 14-day trial lets you test the discount against your actual catalog before paying. Printify Premium is only competitive on the annual plan. At $39 a month it is the most expensive option here by a wide margin and needs roughly $195 a month of product spend just to break even.

Quotes read August 2026 from Printify's pricing page, Printify's Premium announcement, Printful's pricing page and Printful's plans page. Both vendors state that discounts vary by product; Printful's plans page says "product discounts vary from product to product".
Notice how similar the headline numbers now are. Both land on $24.99 at their best rate and both advertise a 33% ceiling. That similarity is why the choice is not really about the discount percentage — it is about the billing structure underneath it, which is where the two diverge sharply.
The break-even table nobody publishes
A subscription that gives you a percentage off is worth paying for only once the percentage exceeds the fee. That threshold depends on one number: what you spend on base product costs in a month, before any discount. Not your revenue, not your order count — your fulfilment spend.
Applying the published rates, here is what each plan nets you per month:
| Your monthly product cost (pre-discount) | Saved at 20% | Printify Premium monthly (−$39) | Printify Premium annual (−$24.92) | Printful Growth (−$24.99) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | $20 | −$19.00 | −$4.92 | −$4.99 |
| $150 | $30 | −$9.00 | +$5.08 | +$5.01 |
| $200 | $40 | +$1.00 | +$15.08 | +$15.01 |
| $300 | $60 | +$21.00 | +$35.08 | +$35.01 |
| $600 | $120 | +$81.00 | +$95.08 | +$95.01 |
Our arithmetic, using 20% as the conservative planning rate because both vendors qualify their discounts with "up to" and Printful states they vary by product. Printify's annual plan is $299 a year, which we have divided to $24.92 a month. A positive number is what the subscription earns you after its own fee.
The break-even points, at 20%: roughly $195 a month of product cost for Printify Premium billed monthly, roughly $125 for Printify Premium billed annually, and roughly $125 for Printful Growth. If your discount genuinely lands at the 33% ceiling those thresholds fall to about $118, $76 and $76 respectively — but you should verify the real rate on the specific blanks you sell before planning at the ceiling.
This is the same trap we found in AI video credit pricing and in digital storefront fees: the headline rate is real, but it applies to a base most sellers have not measured. Work out your own number before you subscribe to either.
What Printful's $12K threshold actually measures
This is the single most misreported fact in this comparison. Roundups summarise it as "free once you hit $12K in sales", which readers reasonably take to mean store revenue. Printful's own wording is narrower.
Printful's plans page states that "$12K in yearly sales" earns one year of free subscription, and defines the calculation as "taking your total order sum for the year, subtracting all discounts, shipping, and tax/VAT, and taking into consideration any digitization and Printful service fees".
Three things follow. Shipping is stripped out before the count, and shipping is a large share of a typical print-on-demand order. Tax and VAT are stripped out too. And discounts — including, plausibly, the Growth discount itself — come off first. Whatever number your store's dashboard shows, the figure Printful measures you on is smaller.
We could not confirm from Printful's public pages whether "total order sum" means the retail value of orders or what Printful charges you, and the difference is material: a store retailing $12,000 of shirts pays Printful far less than $12,000 for them. Before you plan around the threshold, ask Printful support which figure your account is measured on. Treat it as a bonus that may arrive rather than a discount you have already earned.
The $169 Printify billing trap
Printify raised Premium's monthly price from $29 to $39 for billing cycles on or after February 17, 2026, and left the annual price unchanged at $299. That single decision is worth understanding, because it changed the shape of the plan more than the price.
Twelve months at $39 is $468. The annual plan is $299. Paying monthly now costs $169 more a year for the same subscription — a 36% premium, which matches the "save 36%" figure Printify puts on its own pricing page.
Before February 2026 the monthly plan was defensible: $29 against $299 annual is a $49 gap across a year, a reasonable price for not committing. At $39 it is no longer a flexibility premium, it is a penalty. If Printify Premium is right for you at all, it is right annually. If a year's commitment feels like too much, that is a signal the subscription is not yet earning its place — and Printful's 14-day trial and no-annual-lock-in structure is the better fit for that situation.
What neither subscription covers
They are the same company now
Worth knowing before you weigh these as rivals: Printful and Printify announced a merger on November 5, 2024. Printful's own announcement stated that "both the Printful and Printify brands will be maintained for the foreseeable future, and existing sellers and customers can expect to see new offerings on both platforms soon".
In August 2026 that is still how it works — separate catalogs, separate accounts, separate subscriptions, and plan pricing that moved independently on each side in early 2026. Printful consolidated its paid tiers around a single Growth plan, and Printify repriced Premium's monthly rate. So the two subscriptions genuinely are different products with different economics, and this comparison holds.
What it does mean is that the competitive pressure keeping these two priced against each other is now internal rather than external. We are not going to predict what that produces. It is simply a reason to prefer the plan you can leave — which, on the numbers above, is Printful Growth.
Free plans compared
Both free tiers are genuinely usable, which is unusual in this niche and is the main reason not to rush a subscription.
| Platform | Free plan | The binding constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Printify Free | $0/mo, 5 stores per account, unlimited product designs | You pay full catalog prices. Store count is generous; margin is not. |
| Printful Free | $0/mo, 20% off sample orders, 1 sample order a month with up to 3 items | Full product pricing, and sample ordering is rate-limited while you are still testing designs. |

Tool Income Lab recommendation
Run both free plans for one full month, then add up what you actually paid in base product costs. Under $125, subscribe to neither. Over $125 and growing, take Printful Growth's 14-day trial and check the discount on your own blanks before the trial ends. Only pay Printify Premium if you are committing annually at $299.
FAQ
Is Printify Premium worth it?
It depends on your monthly base-product spend, not your sales. At Printify's "up to 20% off all products" rate, the $39 monthly plan needs roughly $195 a month of pre-discount product cost to break even and the $299 annual plan needs roughly $125. Below those figures the subscription costs more than it returns.
Why did Printify Premium go from $29 to $39?
Printify raised the monthly price for billing cycles on or after February 17, 2026, keeping the annual price at $299 and pairing the increase with added benefits including Sellers Club PRO access. The effect is that monthly billing now costs $468 a year against $299 annually — a $169 gap.
Does the Printful Growth plan really become free?
Printful's plans page says $12K in yearly sales earns one year free, but defines yearly sales as your total order sum minus discounts, shipping and tax/VAT, with digitization and service fees taken into account. That is not your store's gross revenue. Confirm with Printful which figure your account is measured on before relying on it.
Do either of these plans discount shipping?
Neither plan page lists a shipping discount. The discounts named are on products, branding and sample orders. Since shipping is often the largest variable cost after the blank, calculate break-even on product cost alone.
Are Printify and Printful the same company?
They merged, announced November 5, 2024, with both brands to be maintained "for the foreseeable future". As of August 2026 they still operate separate catalogs, accounts and subscriptions, and both repriced their plans independently in early 2026.
Final recommendation
Do not pick between these on the discount percentage. Both advertise the same 33% ceiling and both land at $24.99 at their best rate, so the percentage tells you nothing. Pick on billing structure, because that is what decides your cost when your sales move.
Printful Growth is the better-shaped subscription for a store that is growing: no annual lock-in, a 14-day trial, and a threshold that eventually removes the fee entirely. Printify Premium is a reasonable deal at $299 a year if you are already committed and spending over roughly $125 a month on blanks, and a poor one at $39 a month in almost every case.
And if your product spend is under $100 a month, the correct answer is neither. Both free plans are usable, and the subscription is a cost you take on once volume justifies it — not a growth lever that creates the volume.
Every figure here is an August 2026 snapshot from the vendors' own pages. Both changed plan pricing within the last eight months, so re-check before you commit to a year.
